Civil And Environmental Engineering

Organisational unit: Department

Organisation profile

The Department of Civil Engineering prides itself on its research and knowledge exchange. Working closely with industry, international partners, and interdisciplinary researchers in other department and universities, the department's faculty and students are developing new boundaries for technological capabilities and new solutions for the world.

We have two main multidisciplinary research themes, and a number of research-oriented partnerships:

  • Infrastructure Research
  • Environment Research

David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability.  The Department launched the DLCS in 2007 as a research centre and postgraduate school that links researchers from across the University of Strathclyde and beyond to provide innovative solutions in environment, infrastructure and transportation.

Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering (GRP).  The GRP was funded to promote the multidisciplinary collaboration and world-class joint research facilities between leading research groups in Universities of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian and the University of West of Scotland.

Joint Research Institutes.  The Department leads the Joint Research Institute in Environmental, Infrastructure and Transportation Engineering, formed under the GRP. It is also an active member of the JRI in Mechanics of Materials, Structures, and Bioengineering.

Sustainable Glasgow.  This feasibility study investigates policy and actions to enable Glasgow to become one of Europe's most sustainable cities. This multidisciplinary team of University, Glasgow City Council and external partners examines low-carbon energy potential, transport needs and new telecommunications infrastructure.
