Personal Statement

Alison is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Activity for Health at Strathclyde University and a core member of the Physical Activity for Health group.  She completed a BSc in Physiology and Sports Science at the University of Glasow (1998) before undertaking a PhD through the same university (completed 2003).  She was a Lecturer at Dundee University (2003-2008) before moving to Strathclyde University in 2009.

Teaching Interests

Core teaching member - BSc Sport and Physical Activity degree programme

  • Module leader for several classes (Foundations of Physical activity for health; Culture and Context; Physical Activity with Specialist Populations).
  • Honours Year dissertation supervisor.
  • Second year co-ordinator

Several invited external duties

  • Invited external examiner for PhD thesis; University of Birmingham (2007); University of Bristol (2009); University of Victoria, Australia (2001); University of Ulster (2011); University of Newcastle (2014); University of Stirling (2014).
  • Invited external examiner for the BSc Sport, Physical Activity and Health degree programme at the University of Leeds Metropolitan (2012-2016).

Research Interests

Research expertise in physical acitivity and sedentary behaviour and behaviour change, with emphasis towards prevention and management of chronic disease.  Focus towards diabetes research, but with past and current funded research in breast and colon cancer, respiratory and cardiovascular disease.  She is a successful researcher evident from: an extensive publication profile; list of presentations at National and International conferences; strong grant income history and evidence of past and current leadership of small research teams and supervision of successful postgraduate research students. Alison has a drive towards implementation of research findings and knowledge exchange within community and clinical practice and has worked with a number of community and clinical groups on related projects and guidelines.
