Ann-Marie Gibson

Senior Lecturer

Personal Statement

I joined the School of Psychological Sciences and Health in 2012 and I am currently a Lecturer in Physical Activity for Health. My main areas of teaching are Sport Psychology and Physical Activity Psychology. My current research interests focus on the psychological determinants of physical activity behaviour in adolescent girls, physical activity and sedentary behaviour in school and key transitions in sport and phyiscal activity contexts.

I am a BASES accredited Sport Scientist (Psychology) and a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. I currently provide psychological support to a number of elite athletes and coaches in Scotland, working with Basketball, Rugby, Golf and Football.

Research Interests

My research interests mainly involve the psychological determinants of physical activity behaviour and the psychology of elite sport. Previous doctoral work focused on the psychological determinants of physical activity behaviour in adolescent girls during the transition from primary to secondary school. More recent work with this population sample is examining the efficacy of a physical activity consultation intervention with adolescent girls using social media as a follow-up strategy for behaviour change. Additional work examining physical activity and sedentary behaviour of adolescents within the school environment is also on-going.  I have a keen interest in transitions in sport and physical activity contexts, with a current postgraduate student project examining student health behaviours during the transition to University.
