Research Interests

My work focuses on the development and application of space mission systems and space technology, challenging conventional ideas to enable new concepts in the exploration and exploitation of space.

Specific interests are in the use of multiple spacecraft to enable new space services through the application of concepts from swarm engineering, combined with astrodynamics and space system design. This work has been developed and applied to concepts for polar Earth observation, the deployment of large swarms and constellations of spacecraft, novel transfer trajectories and threat avoidance within swarm engineering.

Personal Statement

I am the Director of the Scottish Centre of Excellence in Satellite Applications. My work focuses on the development and application of space mission systems and space technology, challenging conventional ideas to enable new concepts in the exploration and exploitation of space, and is reported in over 100 publications funded from a diverse funding portfolio ranging from the research councils to space agencies and industrial collaborators.

I led the development of The International Handbook of Space Technology (find out more by clicking here), a comprehensive handbook providing a holistic understanding of the system-of-systems that is a modern spacecraft, and I am one of only two European Associate Editors of the Journal of Guidance, Control and Dynamics, the top-ranked archival journal in Aerospace Engineering.

Prior to joining the University of Strathclyde in 2008, I worked at SciSys Ltd., working on several projects throughout the entire lifecycle, including ADM-Aeolus and LISA-Pathfinder. I am Deputy Chair of the UK Space Agency’s Space Programme Review Panel, represent the University of Strathclyde on the UK Space Action Network (SPAN), where I am the alternative member of the Space Leadership Council, and I am a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
