Robert M. Kalin BSc MSc PhD CEnv FICE FRSC FGS

Professor of Environmental Engineering for Sustainability

 

Professor Kalin’s academic and professional interests are focused on Environment Science and Engineering to underpin the global sustainability agendas.  His work ranges from hydrogeology and Paleohydrology of local to regional scale groundwater systems, study of global biogeochemical cycles and climate change, to site specific biogeochemistry of water treatment, contaminated land and groundwater (including engineering design of sustainable remediation methods), development of new chemical analysis techniques for soil, air and water that to better understand risk to humans and the environment.

 

Management Experience

Head of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Strathclyde University, Glasgow 1 Oct 2007 to 31st July 2011.  During the past two decade of Professor Kalin has been PI and Project Manager on research projects valued over £14M.

Professional Honours

Prof. Kalin is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), and Fellow of the Geological Society of London (FGS). 

 

Expert Witness Experience

Prof. Kalin has experience as an expert witness for Environmental Forensics and Environmental Engineering.

 

Consultancy and Design

Professor Kalin has considerable experience as an Environmental Consultant and as a Design and Build engineer for contaminated land and groundwater remediation.

 

International Capacity Building Activities

Professor Kalin has been active in research and capacity building for water resource management and environment & human health research in many countries in the Middle East, Far East, and Africa.  One example is Professor Kalin Chaired the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Expert Meeting to Develop Educational Products for Global Capacity Building in Isotope Hydrology Vienna, Austria, (Development and Validation of Global Teaching for UN Decade Water for Life).  Currently, he has a number of water and human health projects underway in Malawi.
