Personal Statement

Dr. Vivienne Smith is a lecturer in Primary Education at the University of Strathclyde.

Her interests are in language, literacy and literature and she has published both on the development of children as readers and on children’s literature. She is particularly interested in the positioning reading as a creative and social practice, and in the role of texts in this process: how texts encourage readers to think, to reflect and to moderate their understandings of reading itself.

Recent projects have included Creative Reading  a project with Inverclyde Council, funded by Creative Scotland and,  with Evelyn Arizpe, Reading Fictions: a series of seminars funded by the British Academy to investigate the way readers and reading is portrayed in children’s books.

Her current project: Playful Reading, with Helen Marwick, bridges psychological  and educational perspectives on the teaching of reading, and attempts to develop a robust theoretical understanding of the relationship between play, reading and playfulness in the early years and beyond.
